Water Rate Increase Meeting - December 14th SUMMARY

Thank You to Ag Supporters and Speakers! Thanks to all of you who attended or spoke at the Escondido City Council Meeting on December 15. The council voted to keep agriculture rates at 2011 levels, providing a bridge until recycled water is available. This decision sets the stage for growers and the City to work together on solutions to our water issues, including a differential service level for agricultural users. A strong partnership between the City and growers will help ensure that agriculture remains a vibrant part of the City's economy and brand.

Thanks to the Escondido City Council! We should all thank the council members for exercising strong leadership on a difficult issue. Their unanimous decision to support investment in water resources and water infrastructure, and support agriculture, demonstrates a clear understanding of the critical investment and business issues facing the City.

Escondido Rich Agricultural History

ESCONDIDO'S RICH AGRICULTURAL HISTORY

Agriculture was a mainstay of the Escondido economy from the late 19th century up through the 1950's.  As Escondido grew, agriculture became less visible but remained a significant part of the economy.  Avocados, citrus, grapes, nursery products, and other crops drive a silent but substantial economic engine today.  Avocado revenues alone can impact the economy by more than $100 million per year, and most of these dollars are spent in Escondido businesses.  However, because of rising water prices and development pressures Escondido faces important decisions about the future of Agriculture.
